What tools can be helpful in succession planning?

Depending upon an employer's size and scope, and the goal(s) for its succession planning, a number of tools may be helpful to the process. These include:
- Structured leadership assessment (particularly relevant to senior leadership positions and, at these levels, often conducted by outside consultants);
- The employer's internal performance review process;
- A "library" of available internal and external classes, training programs, conferences and seminars, community involvement opportunities, mentor programs and outside Board opportunities, all designed to support individual development planning; and,
- A structured feedback process to individual succession candidates.
In addition, while not necessarily a "tool," an important component of succession planning is the communication process between senior leadership and the Board of Directors (where in place).
