Minimum essential coverage is the type of coverage an individual needs to have in order to meet the individual responsibility requirement under the ACA and includes:
- Health insurance coverage offered in the individual market (such as a qualified health plan offered through an affordable insurance exchange);
- Coverage under an eligible employer-sponsored plan; and
- Government-sponsored coverage such as Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program and TRICARE.
