May an employer require one of its drivers to submit to a medical examination if it believes the driver is having eyesight issues?

Yes. Under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), an employer is permitted to make a disability-related inquiry and may require a medical examination if it believes that an employee's ability to perform essential job functions is impaired by a medical condition. Therefore, an employer who believes a driver has issues with his or her eyesight may require the driver to submit to a medical examination because a condition impairing the eyesight would obstruct his or her ability to perform an essential job function-driving.
