California has long been a bellwether state when it comes to employment law. And 2013 has certainly done nothing to diminish that reputation.
In a new XpertHR podcast, management-side attorney Anthony Oncidi discusses the most important developments from the past year or so affecting California employers. Oncidi heads the Los Angeles office of Proskauer Rose and is a frequent commentator on breaking employment law issues.
Some of the more notable highlights include:
- Expanding employees' eligibility for paid family leave;
- Limits on employers' abilities to obtain criminal background information;
- Increasing the state minimum wage;
- Stiffer penalties for misclassifying employees; and
- A key California Supreme Court ruling upholding an arbitration agreement.
Also discussed are the biggest HR challenges facing employers in the state, as well as pending developments to watch.
