How to Recognize Signs of Substance Abuse

Most experts agree that it is not always easy to recognize the signs of substance abuse. It is frequently hidden behind what some call the "built-in self-preservation mechanism of denial." However, because it can cause workplace problems such as absenteeism, low productivity, embezzlement, theft, safety concerns and poor performance, it is important to identify and address. Substance abuse is treatable, particularly when it is addressed as a chronic disease. Employers that are concerned that one or more of their employees has a substance abuse problem will find it helpful to follow these steps.
