December 17, 2013

The District of Columbia city council has passed legislation that would raise the city's minimum wage to be the highest in the nation starting next summer.

If signed by Mayor Vincent Gray, the bill, 2013 Bill Text DC B. 459, would raise the minimum wage from its current rate of $8.25 to $9.50 on July 1, 2014, to $10.50 on July 1, 2015, and to $11.50 on July 1, 2016.

Following those increases, the minimum wage would then be adjusted for inflation on July 1 of every year.

The bill also would establish new recordkeeping requirements for employers that claim a minimum wage credit for tipped employees.

In an email to XpertHR, a press officer said the mayor will sign the bill but does not expect to receive it before December 25.
