New Michigan Law Prohibits Discrimination Against Nursing Mothers: Employment Law Manual and Chart Updated

Authors: Beth P. Zoller, Brightmine Legal Editor

Michigan has enacted the Breastfeeding Antidiscrimination Act, which specifically prohibits public accommodations from discriminating against women who breastfeed. The law applies to employers and will protect nursing mothers from discrimination and harassment in the workplace. It permits individuals whose rights have been violated to bring a civil action for injunctive relief, actual or presumed damages, attorney fees and costs. The law took effect June 24.

In light of these changes, the Michigan Discrimination section of the Employment Law Manual has been updated and the EEO Protected Classes by State and Municipality chart has been amended.
