Maryland Law Permitting Medical Marijuana Use May Affect Employers

A new Maryland law effective on October 1 that permits the use of marijuana for medical purposes may have an impact on workplace policies regarding employee drug use and testing. +2013 Bill Text MD H.B. 1101. The law permits the distribution of marijuana only through academic medical centers that enroll users in approved residency programs.

Although it may take some time before medical centers in the state begin dispensing medical marijuana and the law does not specifically address employers, employers should be familiar with it as there may be some employees seeking medical marijuana treatment through approved residency programs.
